Its plot rife with sexual politics and satirical insights into lust, ambition, power and marital infidelity. Handel's bold opera was a bit too much for its day despite its richly sensuous score. Since Semele's rediscovery in 1925, though, it has become a favorite of opera houses around the world; its first H+H performances since 1999 are a fitting finale to a memorable season-long musical journey.
