Artist Spotlight: Pianist Juho Pohjonen

Since stepping in on a moment's notice to make his debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Manfred Honeck for Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen has had a remarkable 2018-2019. He appeared as soloist with the Nashville, Pacific, Duluth Superior, and Bay Atlantic symphony orchestras and gave recitals in Savannah, Toronto, and Burlington. At his 92nd Street Y recital debut in April, Anthony Tommasini noted that in Pohjonen's performance of Esa-Pekka Salonen's Dichotomie, "he had the piece sounding alluring, with watery runs and milky colors amid bouts of pummeling chords. It no longer seemed nearly impossible. You might say he played it like a master." (New York Times

As a chamber musician, he gave a "polished" and "technically impressive" (Washington Classical Review) account of Beethoven’s Piano Trio in G major with members of the Calidore Quartet at Wolf Trap. In his collaboration with the Escher String Quartet presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Pohjonen "proved himself to be a singularly luminous Mozart interpreter. Spontaneous, stylish, and well-paced, he seemed to conjure the notes from thin air, breaking fresh, verdant ground." (Chicago Classical Review)
