92Y October Concerts

92nd Street Y’s illustrious 2016/17 concert season opens with internationally renowned pianist Jeremy Denk joining the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, “the leading orchestra of its kind in America” (The New York Times), in the Orchestra’s 92Y debut as well as its first New York performance in five years. The SPCO begins the evening with the New York premiere of O Mikros, O Megas (The Small World, The Huge World) by NYC-born composer George Tsontakis, whose ties to the Orchestra include three additional world premieres, which earned a Grawemeyer Award and Grammy nomination. According to Mr. Tsontakis, O Mikros, O Megas was inspired by the opening lines of Axion Esti, written by the great 20th-century Greek poet Odysseas Elytis. The Orchestra also performs Schubert’s Symphony No. 2 in B-flat major and, with Mr. Denk as soloist, Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A Major. Jeremy Denk -- a 2013 MacArthur Fellow, 2014 Avery Fisher Prize recipient and Musical America's 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year -- has been on the roster of SPCO’s Artistic Partners since 2014.

ANGELA HEWITT: BACH ODYSSEY

Four-Season Cycle of Bach’s Complete Keyboard Works Begins

After her extraordinary performance of The Art of Fugue at 92Y in October 2015, Angela Hewitt, “the outstanding Bach pianist of her generation” (The Sunday Times, London), showcases her skills as one of the world's foremost performers and interpreters of Bach’s music with a four-season, twelve-recital survey of his complete keyboard works, which she previously recorded for the Hyperion label to great acclaim. Referring to her father, who was a cathedral organist, Ms. Hewitt stated: “My journey with Bach began the day I was born, if not before.” In 2016/17, the first season of the project, three recital programs include a varied program of Fantasias, Inventions, Sinfonias and Cappriccios (October 27), the six complete French Suites (October 30) and in the spring, selected Partitas and Sonatas (April 4).

A 2015 inductee of Gramophone Magazine’s “Hall of Fame,” Ms. Hewitt’s second recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations is scheduled for release on September 30.
