Masters of the Keyboard: Inon Barnatan

Hailed as “one of the most admired pianists of his generation,” by the New York Times, Israeli pianist Inon Barnatan offers a fascinating look at “musical moments,” with versions of these small gems by Schubert (Moments musicaux, D. 780), Israeli composer Avner Dorman (Two Moments musicaux) and Rachmaninoff (Six Moments musicaux, Op. 16).  The 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner is revered for his sensitivity, technical brilliance, and piercing musical intellect. The Washington Post recently remarked that Barnatan’s “poignant solos brought tears to the eyes because they were so tenderly wrought….the pianist’s joy in being in the moment acted as a catalyst and generated a sparkling energy that carried through to the final notes.”

20th Anniversary Concert: Brazilian Guitar Quartet

The Latin Grammy award winning Brazilian Guitar Quartet returns to 92nd Street Y, which has the privilege of helping the Quartet celebrate their 20th anniversary. Known for their “world-class degree of precision, near-perfect balance and sensitive musicality,” (Los Angeles Times) the Quartet states: “2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the foundation of our quartet. We released our first album in 1999, and in 2000 became internationally recognized after our first tour, which included a New York City debut concert at 92nd Street Y. Over the course of the last 20 years—in addition to the music of Bach and Spanish composers—Brazilian classical music has been the signature essence of our quartet, as we have performed and promoted some of Brazil’s most significant composers through unique arrangements of piano, chamber and symphonic works. As we celebrate this anniversary season, we will present the diversity and richness of Brazilian classical music through some of the most successful pieces in our career. In the first half of tonight’s concert, we’ll perform two contrasting string quartets by Heitor Villa-Lobos, one of the most celebrated composers of our country. Our recording of these quartets earned a 2011 Grammy Award. In the program’s second half, we’ll interpret Serious Variations by Ronaldo Miranda, one of the most active Brazilian composers today. And we’ll perform two pieces by Guarnieri and Mignone, both important nationalist composers of the 20th century. The entire program is a quintessential representation of Brazil’s culture, from the influence of the countryside folklore to the popular music of the streets of Rio de Janeiro, the simplicity of a samba to Villa-Lobos’ elaborate String Quartet No. 12. Finally, it is interesting to consider that the acoustic guitar is itself a symbol of national identity in Brazil. As such, when repertoire is arranged for and performed with guitars, it gains a yet deeper Brazilian dimension.”
