New Jersey Symphony 2022-2023 Season Highlights
The New Jersey Symphony celebrates the Symphony’s landmark centennial season in 2022– 23 under the continued leadership of and Music Director Xian Zhang. It is one of only three North American orchestras of comparable size to reach this significant milestone. The New Jersey Symphony will redefine what it means to be a nationally leading, relevant orchestra in the 21st century, renewing its deeply rooted commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion by championing new, and often local, artists; engaging audiences for whom the inspiring depth and breadth of classical music will be new; and incorporating the broadest possible representation in all aspects of its organization to better reflect and serve its communities. Concerts take place around the state, at NJPAC in Newark and at venues in Red Bank, Morristown, Princeton and New Brunswick.

To celebrate the centennial, the Symphony performs four world premiere commissions by a diverse roster of composers: the Symphony’s Resident Artistic Catalyst Daniel Bernard Roumain (June 9–11); Steven Mackey (April 21–23); Chen Yi (June 1–4); and Darryl Kubian (March 16–19). Also on the schedule is a co-commission by Wynton Marsalis (November 12) and works by other living composers including Sarah GibsonArvo PärtAaron Jay Kernis and Dorothy Chang and Jessie Montgomery. The symphony presents interdisciplinary collaborations with New Jersey artists and arts organizations, including dancers from Nimbus Dance and the New Jersey Ballet, poets from the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival in Newark and vocal groups from Montclair State University and Princeton University.

Throughout the centennial season, the Symphony welcomes back former leaders: Music Directors Neeme Järvi and Hugh Wolff; former Assistant Conductor Gemma New; and former Interim Music Director George Manahan.
