SONIC SPECTRUM II – Two New York Premieres

Sean Shepherd’s violin and piano duo Latticework, a CMS co-commission, makes its New York premiere at CMS, performed by the artists for whom it was written, violinist Leila Josefowicz and former Emerson Quartet cellist Paul Watkins. Josefowicz, a passionate advocate of contemporary music, performs the New York premiere of another work co-commissioned for her by CMS with pianist and longtime collaborator John Novacek, Charlotte Bray’s Mriya for violin and piano. The title of this work translates from the Ukrainian language as dream, vision, ambition and vow, and the persistent struggle between the dream of freedom, driven by hope and resolve, and the darkness of war, run through the work. Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Sleep On: Three Lullabies for Cello and Piano and selections from Jörg Widman’s 24 Duos for Violin and Cello round out the program.

ALL BEETHOVEN PROGRAM

Beethoven’s many works, right down to their individual movements, abound with a remarkable variety. This all-Beethoven program highlights the abundant variety and genius of his compositions, beginning with early chamber works and culminating in the grandeur of his “Archduke” Trio, which was among his last public performances as a pianist because of his growing deafness. Beethoven’s music is performed by an all-star ensemble of CMS artists, all highly acclaimed and in-demand around the world: Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonenviolinists Kristin Lee and Arnaud Sussman and cellist and CMS co-artistic director David Finckel.

ROSE STUDIO SERIES - Boccherini, Barrière, & d'Ambrosio

Enjoy lesser-known corners of the classical repertoire featuring works by Luigi Boccherini, Jean Barrière, and Alfredo d’Ambrosio. Boccherini’s string quintet highlights a rich, sonorous texture with two cellos instead of the more typical two violas, while d’Ambrosio’s Suite for Strings (1900), a rarely heard gem, employs the same two-cello instrumentation, featuring cellists Nicholas Canellakis and current Bowers Program artist Jonathan Swensen, who recently won the Naumburg International Cello Competition.

SHOSTAKOVICH: 1906–1975
All-Shostakovich Program

Despite being a highly decorated member of the Communist Party, Dmitri Shostakovich also wrote works that led to multiple denunciations by the Soviets. His body of music speaks to the tension of being both celebrated and denigrated by the Soviet government. This all-Shostakovich program features his first piano trio; a series of songs with piano trio set to the words of fellow Soviet poet Alexander Blok; and a chamber version of Shostakovich’s final symphony. The varying ensembles include the Sitkovetsky Trio; soprano Andriana Chuchman; pianist Inon Barnatan, dubbed "one of the most admired pianists of his generation” by The New York Times; the always in-demand violinist Paul Huang; cellist Jonathan Swensen, a current Bowers Program participant and winner of the 2024 Naumburg International Cello Competition; and a trio of percussionists – Victor Caccese and Ian David Rosenbaum, founding members of the Grammy-nominated Sandbox Percussion, and the dynamic and elegant Ayano Kataoka, who was the first percussionist selected for CMS’s Bowers Program.

ART OF THE RECITAL: DAVID BYRD-MARROW AND CORY SMYTHE
World Premieres by Byrd-Marrow and Smythe

Horn player David Byrd-Marrow is a versatile artist who plays horn in the International Contemporary Ensemble and The Knights and is on the faculty at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Byrd-Marrow and pianist Cory Smythe present an unusual program that includes two world premieres for horn and piano by the artists as well as work by French trombonist and composer Jérôme Naulais; American composer Alec Wilder; German composer, conductor and clarinetist Jörg Widmann; jazz pianist and composer Billy Strayhorn; and Olivier Messiaen.

“This program is meant to be an expression of gratitude for the horn and the wonderful landscape of music in which the instrument has allowed me to participate," said Byrd-Marrow. "Reflection is also a theme, but the common thread is a search for new horizons. With the introduction of two new works, by Cory Smythe and myself, I hope to discover even more expressive avenues for the instrument that has given me so much.”
