Donghoon Shin’s Upon His Ghostly Solitude
The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) returns for its first U.S. tour in more than ten years, under the baton of its new Music Director Jaap van Zweden, with performances at Carnegie Hall in New York and at The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts at Oklahoma State University.
The SPO plays a leading role in shaping the Korean classical music scene and providing an international platform for Korean artists. On this U.S. tour, two outstanding Korean soloists join the orchestra: Deutsche Grammophon recording artist violinist Bomsori Kim in Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor; and Jaehong Park, the young Korean pianist who astonished the world at the 2021 Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
Jaap Van Zweden presented the Seoul Philharmonic's new season at a press conference in Seoul on Tuesday, as reported in The Korea Herald. Maestro Van Zweden described the upcoming season as "a blueprint of what we have done over the past year, balancing legacy with adaptability.”
The concert presented by Carnegie Hall features the U.S. premiere of Inferno by composer Jung Jae-il, who is well-known for his scores composed for the film Parasite and TV series Squid Game; Inferno will also be performed at the McKnight Center. Jae-il, who will attend the Carnegie concert, found inspiration for the work in the last sentence of Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. The composer spoke about the work and his process at Tuesday's press conference; coverage in The Korea Times.
Jung Jae-il Composer's Note on Inferno:
This is the very last sentence of Italo Calvino’s novel Invisible Cities. Marco Polo says this to Kublai Khan: “The inferno of the living is not something that will be; if there is one, it is what is already here, the inferno where we live every day, that we form by being together. There are two ways to escape suffering it. The first is easy for many: accept the inferno and become such a part of it that you can no longer see it. The second is risky and demands constant vigilance and apprehension: seek and learn to recognize who and what, in the midst of the inferno, are not inferno, then make them endure, give them space.”
This piece began with that sentence.
As I reflect on the countless deaths, suffering, and farewells caused by wars, plagues, and natural disasters occurring around the world, I realize that their scale is far beyond what I could ever fathom. In the face of darkness and flames, where not even an inch ahead is visible, I tried to think about how we are to go on living.
Though I am a composer without formal classical training, I would like to express my deep gratitude to Maestro van Zweden, who encouraged me from our very first meeting and gave me the courage to take on the challenge of composition.
A recent work by Korean composer Donghoon Shin, Upon His Ghostly Solitude, co-commissioned by the SPO and inspired by the poetry of Yeats and the music of Alban Berg, is featured in the second Oklahoma concert.

About Jaap van Zweden
Jaap van Zweden is a master builder who ‘hears a vision’ for an orchestra and then works to achieve it. His artistic mastery has served him and the orchestras he has guided in good stead. Included among these are his recent music directorships: the New York Philharmonic where he championed and then, in 2022, inaugurated the transformation of New York’s David Geffen Hall; Hong Kong Philharmonic, which he led to international prominence; and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, which earned national acclaim under his direction. His current positions include Music Director of the Seoul Philharmonic since 2024, as well as Taiwan’s Evergreen Symphony Orchestra Artist-in-Residence beginning in 2025. In the fall of 2026, he adds Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.
Widely recognized on three continents, Jaap van Zweden appears as guest in Europe with Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Orchestre de Paris, Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and London Symphony Orchestra, and, in the United States, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and other distinguished ensembles.
Among Jaap van Zweden’s over 50 recordings is the Hong Kong Philharmonic in first-ever performances in Hong Kong of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, released on the Naxos label. To this is added the New York Philharmonic recordings of the World Premiere of David Lang’s prisoner of the state (2020) and Julia Wolfe’s Grammy-nominated Fire in my mouth (2019), both released on the Decca Gold label. His acclaimed performances of Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and Parsifal — the last of which earned him the prestigious Edison Award for Best Opera Recording in 2012 — are available on CD and DVD.
Amsterdam-born Jaap van Zweden, was appointed the youngest-ever concertmaster of Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra at age 19 while still a student at Juilliard, and began his conducting career almost 20 years later, in 1996. In April 2023, van Zweden received the Concertgebouw Prize, for exceptional contributions to that organization’s artistic profile. He remains Conductor Emeritus of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Honorary Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, where he was previously Chief Conductor from 2005 to 2013; he also served as Chief Conductor of the Royal Flanders Orchestra (2008–2011) and as Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (2008–2018) and New York Philharmonic (2018-2024). Under his leadership, the Hong Kong Philharmonic (2012-2024) was named Gramophone’s Orchestra of the Year in 2019. Van Zweden was named Musical America’s 2012 Conductor of the Year and was the subject of a CBS 60 Minutes profile in 2018.
In 1997, Jaap van Zweden and his wife, Aaltje, established the Papageno Foundation to support families of children with autism. In the twenty-five years since, the Foundation has grown into a multifaceted organization that focuses on the development of children and young adults with autism. In addition to in-home music therapy through a national network of qualified music therapists in the Netherlands, the Foundation has opened several Papageno Houses for young adults with autism to live, work, and participate in the community.
