New York, NY: Feburary 24, 2026 -- Described as “the essential quartet of our time” by The New York Times, the Takács Quartet comes to Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall on Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 pm, marking a major milestone: the ensemble's final New York performance with cellist András Fejér (the last remaining original member of the Quartet), who announced in December that he would retire at the end of this season.
The program features the New York premiere of Clarice Assad’s NEXUS. Assad wrote in her program note that the new work "was inspired by watching the Takács Quartet’s visceral, whole-body approach to musical expression. NEXUS amplifies the natural physicality of chamber music performance into choreographed symbolism."
"I love Clarice’s infatuation with spontaneity and the unknown," says Takács violinist Harumi Rhodes. "Her music demands precision but also asks us to be unhinged. Clarice brings out the more mischievous side of our quartet playing - more capricious, more provocative…more dangerous, in a good way."
Violinist Edward Dusinberre explains that the rest of the program complements the premiere "with pieces of music that are in tune with Clarice’s ever-present sense of innovation: Haydn’s ‘Rider’ quartet with its improvisatory slow movement and theatrical finale, and Debussy’s Quartet, in which he applies his unique soundscape to the quartet genre." The Takács premiered its first new work by Assad, Clash, in 2021.
he Assad program is also performed in Philadelphia, PA (March 1), Concord, MA (April 12), and Ann Arbor, MI (April 17). Also this spring, the Takács concludes its tour with violist Jordan Bak, performing Mozart’s viola quintets in Washington, DC (April 8), Boston, MA (April 11) and Blacksburg, VA (April 15).
In March, the Quartet embarks on a 10-concert European tour of NEXUS with appearances in Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK (March 24 and 26), bringing Clarice Assad’s innovative work to major international stages. For European tour information, visit the Takács Quartet website.
About the Takács Quartet
Violinist Ed Dusinberre has been with the Quartet since 1993; violinist Harumi Rhodes joined in 2018; violist Richard O’Neill joined in 2020; and cellist András Fejér, the last remaining founding member from the Quartet’s start in 1975, will retire at the end of the 2025–26 season following an extraordinary 51-year tenure. Beginning September 1, 2026, Romanian-born cellist Mihai Marica will join the Takács Quartet and its longstanding residency at the University of Colorado, Boulder, ushering in a new chapter while honoring Fejér’s remarkable legacy.
