SONIC SPECTRUM III: New York Premiere by Frederic Rzewski

As part of CMS’s violin season, this program features three works that show how today’s composers are writing for violin in vivid, distinctive ways. John Corigliano’s The Red Violin Caprices grew out of his score for the film of the same name, bringing a cinematic perspective to the program. David Serkin Ludwig contributes Swan Song, commissioned by Carnegie Hall for violinist Benjamin Beilman and pianist Yekwon Sunwoo. The evening closes with the New York premiere of Frederic Rzewski’s Demons, performed by the artists for whom it was written, Beilman and pianist Orion Weiss.

CELEBRATING FRITZ KREISLER: LECTURE AND CONCERT
CMS Winter Festival’s Violin Celebration concludes on March 8 with a day devoted to beloved Viennese violin virtuoso Fritz Kreisler. Born in Vienna in 1875, he was adored by listeners and musicians alike; his playing and more than 200 compositions redefined the late-Romantic voice of the violin. In 1943 Kreisler became a US citizen and lived in New York City for the rest of his life.

CENTURY OF WINDS

The wind quintet brings together five distinct instruments to explore multiple blends of timbres. Klughardt’s Quintet (1898) is a beautiful example of great writing for each of the five instruments. Louise Farrenc's Sextet adds piano to the winds, providing expanded sonic dimensions and a true tour de force for the pianist. The program is balanced with smaller combinations featuring double reeds, the regal sound of the horn, and upper winds.

ROSE STUDIO SERIES: Družecký, Loeffler, & Widor

Spanning the Classical era through the early 20th century, this program highlights distinctive instrumental voices beyond the standard canon. Družecký’s G-minor Quartet places the oboe at the center of a rarely heard chamber setting. Loeffler’s “La Cornemuse” blends French-inflected lyricism and pastoral color in an unusual trio texture, while Widor’s Piano Quintet in D minor reveals the Romantic intensity of a composer better known for his organ works.
