The Takács Quartet, which is frequently cited as one of today’s best quartets, embarks on its 52^nd season with a new cellist, Mihai Marica. 

As always, the Quartet has a busy touring season in North America and beyond, highlighted by two appearances in New York: at Carnegie Hall on October 16, joined by Jeremy Denk for César Franck’s Piano Quintet, alongside quartets by Mendelssohn and Carlos Simon; and in April with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, performing Gabriela Lena Frank’s 2007 string quartet Quijotadas and quartets by Mozart and Brahms. Denk also joins the Quartet for the Franck Quintet in Berkeley, CA; Portland, OR; Sarasota, FL; Ann Arbor, MI; and Charlottesville, VA. Frank’s Quijotadas graces Takács programs in 13 additional North American cities. Another contemporary work that appears on multiple programs this season—including Carnegie—is Carlos Simon’s Warmth from Other Suns. 

This fall, Hyperion releases the Quartet’s recording of Mozart Viola Quintets with violist Timothy Ridout. 

The group’s other North American engagements include concerts in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Santa Monica, Vancouver, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Berkeley, Ann Arbor, Portland, and at the University of Maryland, where the quartet continues its position as Visiting Artists. The quartet also becomes the Official Chamber Music Ensemble at the Segerstrom Center this season, performing an all-Beethoven program there on February 14. 

As they have been for decades, the members of the Takács are Artists in Residence at the University of Colorado, and during the summer months join the faculty at the Music Academy of the West, running an intensive quartet seminar there. 

In Europe, the Takács Quartet are Associate Artists at Wigmore Hall in London, and perform two concerts there this fall, on November 16 and 18, to include works by Schubert, Carlos Simon, Brahms, Haydn and Gabriela Lena Frank. The ensemble also appears at other prestigious European centers including Vienna (at the Konzerthaus), Oslo, Bergen and Utrecht.
