“Beth Morrison has shepherded dozens of new works into existence over the past 20 years. And her footprint continues to grow.”
The New York Times

“An indefatigable champion of new, unconventional operas.”
The Wall Street Journal

The groundbreaking, genre-busting 21st-century music-theatre works of Beth Morrison Projects’ (BMP) first 20 years are being given a new life through the BMP: SONGBOOK Collection.

  • The BMP: SONGBOOK Anthology—available to the public for the first time beginning today—is a landmark collection of newly released piano/vocal arrangements of more than 60 arias from 35 highly influential works of contemporary opera and music-theatre produced and/or developed by BMP from 2006 to 2026.

  • Also on sale to the public for the first time today is the 500-page An Illustrated Retrospective: The First 20 Years of Beth Morrison Projects, a history of BMP developed for the company’s 20th Anniversary, that documents every production created by Beth Morrison Projects or featured in the PROTOTYPE Festival from 2006-2026.

  • Rounding out the collection are two BMP: SONGBOOK Volume I & Volume II, audio albums (CD and digital format, originally issued in January) that feature more than two dozen selections from the company’s two decades of disruption, innovation and leadership in the opera world. Digital streaming links available HERE.

The BMP: SONGBOOK Collection preserves the sound, imagery, voices, and institutional stories surrounding the music, providing context and – hopefully – inspiration to a whole new generation.

“We are so proud of the work we have done in collaboration with so many artists and partners over the last 20 years,” said Beth Morrison. “We want a way to give this repertoire longevity and answer the two questions people often ask: ‘Can I hear this music?’ and ‘Can I actually get the score so I can perform/study/teach it?’ Now the answer is a resounding yes.”

BMP: SONGBOOK
An Anthology of 21st-Century Arias

The BMP: SONGBOOK Anthology is a landmark collection of more than 60 arias drawn from more than 35 operas commissioned and produced by Beth Morrison Projects in its first 20 years, 2006-2026. Reflecting the influence of BMP in  those two decades, the Anthology offers works by today’s leading composers of contemporary opera and music-theatre that have been hugely influential in the development of contemporary opera in the 21st century. Many pieces are being offered publicly in this format for the first time.

Each aria is presented in an arrangement for voice and piano, along with contextual information about the original production in which the aria appeared., making this collection of influential opera and music-theatre works available to singers, pianists, voice teachers, music educators, conductors, programmers, and other opera professionals who are looking for 21st-century opera repertoire.

“The Anthology opens up a huge new repertoire of contemporary opera works, providing access to music from some of today’s most influential composers in a form that can be used for auditions and performances; the arrangements can be played and brought to life by a vocalist and pianist, without the need for a full instrumental ensemble,” said American baritone and longtime BMP collaborator Nathan Gunn. “These volumes will be a boon to singers, voice students and voice teachers, delivering seminal works of the last 20 years into the hands of artists and practitioners, and making them part of a play-able repertoire.

Volume I is repertoire for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and countertenor; Volume II is material for tenor and baritone. Together, the two volumes total more than 650 pages of music and contextual information.

The Anthology features works by Juhi Bansal, Timur Bekbosunov, Daniel Corral, Mohammed Fairouz, Garrett Fisher, Michael Gordon, Ricky Ian Gordon, Ted Hearne, Peter Hilliard, Molly Joyce, Mary Kouyoumdjian, David Lang, David T. Little, Keeril Makan, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Emma O’Halloran, Paola Prestini, Ellen Reid, Huang Ruo, Kamala Sankaram, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Tamar-kali, and Du Yun.

An Illustrated Retrospective:
The First Twenty Years of Beth Morrison Projects

This volume also provides an invaluable historical account of a period of contemporary opera, chronicling the creative collaborations that shaped the company, including the community of composers, librettists, performers, directors, designers, producers, and presenters involved in BMP’s development. An Illustrated Retrospective complements the audio recording and sheet music by preserving the history, imagery, people, productions, and institutional story surrounding the music.
