Quartetto di Cremona, Italy’s preeminent string quartet, earned the prestigious Franco Buitoni Award in 2019, and are now entering their 23^rd season, having toured extensively in Europe, the United States, South America and Asia, carving out a highly acclaimed, international career among the world’s best string quartets. This season, they make their Carnegie Hall debut on October 26 as part of a five-city US tour in the fall, and return to the US in March 2024, for a performance at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York and appearances in Texas, Idaho and New Mexico. 

Quartetto di Cremona carry on the legacy of the great Quartetto Italiano (1945-1980), one of the most esteemed quartets of the 20^th century; members of Quartetto di Cremona began their string studies with violist Piero Farulli of the Italiano. Their US program this fall is a celebration of string quartets in Italy, with a nod to their mentors; the program features Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 15 in A minor and Ravel’s only string quartet, favorite works recorded by Quartetto Italiano in the 1960s. The program also includes Wolf’s jaunty Italian Serenade from Quartetto di Cremona’s Italian Postcards (Avie 2020). 

The quartet returns to the US in the spring with a program of works by Golijov, Shostakovich and Schubert.  Says Cremona’s Simone Gramaglia “Shostakovich wrote his eighth quartet in memory of the victims of fascism and war; Golijov brings us the beauty of peace and transcendence alongside the drama of fight, violence and hate; and Schubert tells us about youth and the unexpected. So it’s a program about life and death, joy and tragedy and the message that, despite all, there is always time for hope.”
