The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS), a world-renowned organization that has championed chamber music for more than 50 years and brought the personal, intimate experience of chamber music to audiences in New York and around the world, brings a three-concert series to Vero Beach in 2024.  Concerts take place in January, February and March at Trinity Episcopal Church and can be purchased individually or as a three-concert subscription; a complete schedule is below.

“We have really enjoyed the concerts we have done in Vero Beach previously, and we are looking forward to this new series at Trinity Church in 2024,” said pianist Wu Han, who is co-artistic director of CMS with cellist David Finckel.

Mayor of Vero Beach Jonh E. Cotugno said, “We are thrilled to have musicians of this caliber perform for us here in Vero Beach and look forward to three wonderful evenings with the Chamber Music Society.  These concerts are an invaluable addition to the city’s diverse cultural offerings.”

CMS brings the experience of great chamber music to more people than any other organization of its kind with a full season in New York as well as residencies, concert series and concert tours at venues around the country. The series in Vero Beach joins CMS’s ongoing, year-round series at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in New York State and concert series at Drew University in Madison, NJ; the Harris Theater in Chicago, IL; St. Cecilia Music Center in Grand Rapids, MI; Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA; and Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill, KY.

BEETHOVEN, SHOSTAKOVICH, AND DVOŘÁK

Ludwig van Beethoven’s riveting first piano trio, a classic of the chamber music repertoire, opens a program that combines drama and romance in equal measure.CMS Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han are featured as a duo, offering their legendary interpretation of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata. And in Antonin Dvořák’s Piano Quartet, a heartfelt tribute to the composer’s homeland, Finckel and Wu Han are joined by Richard Lin and Timothy Ridout, two brilliant members of CMS’s Bowers Program, which discovers and nourishes the brightest chamber music stars of today.

INSTRUMENTAL INSPIRATIONS

Composers from four lands combine to display their incomparable talents for instrumental display.

From Franz Schubert’s charming classical string trio to Ernő von Dohnányi’s passionate Piano Quintet, the voices of strings and piano will dazzle the ear with the kind of virtuosity and lyricism so uniquely found in chamber music. The electrifying pianist Wu Qian is joined by a string quartet of musicians representing CMS at its finest: Julian Rhee and Alexander Sitkovetsky, violin; Matthew Lipman, viola; and Jonathan Swenson, cello.

TRIOS TRANSFORMED

Haydn is well known for his 104 symphonies and 68 string quartets, but his piano trios supply equal delight for listeners and inspiring challenges for performers. In this program, we hear the direct effect of Haydn’s genius on Beethoven, as three CMS musicians – well-known to audiences and all formidable players – tackle a four-work juxtaposition of seminal trios by both composers. We will hear each composer’s trios evolve, as they did side-by-side in Vienna, where Haydn and Beethoven enjoyed a cordial if somewhat competitive relationship. Beethoven’s “Ghost” Trio concludes, its eerie slow movement reportedly inspired by the witches’ scene from Macbeth. The evening’s trio of CMS artists is Wu Han, piano; Arnaud Sussman, violin/viola; and David Finckel, cello.
