Midori 2023-2024 Season Highlights

Midori, a Kennedy Center Honoree, UN Messenger of Peace and one of the most outstanding violinists of our time, celebrated the 40th anniversary of her professional debut last season with a national recital tour of Bach, alongside newly commissioned music. Her Carnegie Hall recital “gave an object lesson in realizing the intricate contrapuntal thoughts of J.S. Bach… pure wizardry of bow and fingers.” (New York Classical Review) The San Diego Union Tribune described her performances as “ingratiating in their musicality and dazzling in their easy virtuosity… a supreme joy to experience.”  In 2022, she also released a landmark recording of Beethoven Sonatas for Piano & Violin with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet on Warner Classics: “They set the pulse racing with pointed variations of dynamics and phrasing.” (The Strad

This season, Midori embarks on European and US tours with the Swiss chamber orchestra Festival Strings Lucerne, performing Schumann’s Violin Concerto in D minor and Beethoven’s Romance No. 2. She appears in Europe with the WDR Symphony Orchestra with conductor Constantinos Carydis and with the Sofia Philharmonic, performing Bernstein’s Serenade (After Plato's 'Symposium), which she also performed with Michael Stern and the National Repertory Orchestra this summer in Colorado. She will also perform concerts on Asian tours in Japan and Korea. Midori also takes on her new role as Artistic Director of the prestigious Ravinia Steans Music Institute’s Piano & Strings program (succeeding Miriam Fried in that role), and will oversee the summer 2024 institute.

In addition to her performances and teaching, Midori is deeply committed to furthering humanitarian and educational goals. This season she will visit a youth orchestra for a weeklong residency as part of her Orchestras Residencies Program (ORP); create chamber music concerts for smaller communities in the U.S. through Partners in Performance (PiP); provide New York City school children with access to music instruction through Midori & Friends; and bring music to communities in need in Japan and around the world through MUSIC SHARING. In recognition of her ongoing humanitarian work, she serves as a United Nations Messenger of Peace.
