Danish String Quartet 2022-2023 Season Highlights

In 2022-23, the Danish String Quartet celebrate their 20th Anniversary season. Over the past two decades, the quartet has become one of today’s most highly acclaimed and in-demand classical quartets in the world, performing in sold-out concert halls in Europe and North America. They have earned a reputation for bringing stunning, original interpretations to major works in the classical canon; for commissioning and recording new work; and for charting their own path, which includes performing and recording their original and hugely popular arrangements of Scandinavian folk music.  The penultimate recording of their PRISM series, PRISM IV, was released on ECM in June, and a new folk music recording is due out in 2023.

2022-23 Season Highlights

DOPPELGÄNGER 3 – April 2023
This season, the Danish String Quartet continues its DOPPELGÄNGER series, an ambitious 4-year international commissioning project that pairs world premieres from four renowned composers—Bent Sørensen, Lotta Wennäkoski, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, and Thomas Adès—with four major works from the masterful chamber music repertoire of Schubert. Each season, the Quartet performs a premiere on a program with its “doppelgänger”—the Schubert quartet or quintet that inspired it. The DOPPELGÄNGER pieces are commissioned by the Danish String Quartet with the support of Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, UC Santa Barbara Arts & Lectures, Vancouver Recital Society, Flagey in Brussels, and Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam.

New Release on ECM June 3 – PRISM IV

This is the fourth installment (of five recordings) in the PRISM series, the group’s ongoing project linking Bach fugues with Beethoven quartets and quartets by later composers. On Prism IV the quartet interprets Felix Mendelssohn’s (1809-1847) String Quartet No.2. The piece is paired with Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 15 and Bach’s Fugue in G minor in the arrangement of the Austrian educator and composer Emanuel Aloys Förster. Prism I, the first disc of this five-album project for the ECM label, was released in September 2018 and garnered a GRAMMY® nomination | Press Stream or CD Available upon Request

New recording of folk music due out on ECM in 2023 (to be recorded in Copenhagen in fall 2022). This is a follow-up to Last Leaf (ECM), which was their second album of traditional Scandinavian folk music, and was one of the top classical albums of 2017, as chosen by NPR, Spotify and The New York Times, among others.
